Dates are as published by the Bank of England; Bank Rate changes take effect on the day of the announcement. The vote column shows members who voted for the decision versus those who preferred any alternative — for example, at the 8 May 2025 meeting the 5–4 majority faced two members preferring a larger cut and two preferring no change. Meetings not listed resulted in no change to Bank Rate. All four 2026 meetings to date (February, March, April, June) left Bank Rate unchanged at 3.75%.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the next Bank of England interest rate decision?

The next scheduled Bank Rate decision is 30 July, 2026. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) announces its decision eight times a year, roughly every six weeks, always at 12:00 noon UK time on a Thursday, together with the Monetary Policy Summary and the minutes of the meeting.

Is there a Bank of England rate decision today?

Not today. The next Bank Rate decision is scheduled for 30 July, 2026.

What is the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC)?

The Monetary Policy Committee is the nine-member committee of the Bank of England that sets UK monetary policy — most visibly Bank Rate. It consists of the Governor, three Deputy Governors, the Bank’s Chief Economist, and four external members appointed by the Chancellor. Each member has one vote, and decisions are taken by a simple majority.

How many members are on the Monetary Policy Committee?

The MPC has nine members: the Governor of the Bank of England, the three Deputy Governors (for Monetary Policy, Financial Stability, and Markets & Banking), the Bank’s Chief Economist, and four external members appointed by the Chancellor for their expertise in economics and monetary policy. Each of the nine has an equal vote, and Bank Rate is set by simple majority.

What is Bank Rate?

Bank Rate is the United Kingdom's key interest rate — the rate the Bank of England pays on reserve balances held by commercial banks. It is currently 3.75%. Bank Rate anchors short-term interest rates across the UK economy: it feeds through to mortgage rates, savings rates, and the cost of borrowing for households and businesses.

How does the MPC vote work?

Unlike the U.S. Federal Reserve, which publishes a single consensus decision, the Bank of England publishes each MPC member's individual vote on the day of the decision. Nine members each cast one vote for their preferred level of Bank Rate, and the majority decides. The vote split — for example, the 7–2 vote to hold at the June 2026 meeting, where two members preferred a 0.25 percentage point increase — is watched closely by markets as a signal of where policy may head next.

How often does the Bank of England change interest rates?

The MPC meets to set Bank Rate eight times a year — roughly once every six weeks — and can change the rate at any of those meetings, but only when a majority of members votes to do so. Many meetings end in a hold: for example, all four 2026 meetings to date (February, March, April, and June) left Bank Rate unchanged at 3.75%. The rate-change table above lists only the meetings that actually moved Bank Rate.

Why does Bank Rate matter for mortgages and savings?

Bank Rate is the anchor for borrowing costs across the UK. Tracker mortgages move with it directly, and lenders typically adjust standard variable rates soon after a change. Fixed mortgage deals are priced off market expectations of where Bank Rate is heading, so they often move before the MPC acts. Savings rates, business loans, and the pound all respond to the level and the expected path of Bank Rate — which is why every MPC announcement is a fixture in the UK financial calendar.

What is a basis point (bp)?

A basis point (bp) is one one-hundredth of a percentage point: 1 bp = 0.01%, so 25 bp = 0.25% and 50 bp = 0.50%. Central banks and markets quote changes in basis points to avoid ambiguity — "a 25 basis point cut" unmistakably means Bank Rate moved down by 0.25 percentage points. A typical MPC step is 25 bp; in fast-moving periods it has moved in 50 or 75 bp steps, as the 2022 entries in the history table above show.

What time is the Bank of England decision announced?

The MPC announcement is published at 12:00 noon UK time on the scheduled Thursday. The Monetary Policy Summary and the full minutes of the meeting — including every member’s vote — are released at the same moment. At the four meetings each year that coincide with a Monetary Policy Report, the Governor holds a press conference shortly after the announcement.

What is the Monetary Policy Report (MPR)?

Four times a year the Bank of England publishes the Monetary Policy Report alongside the rate decision. It sets out the Bank's latest forecasts for inflation, growth, and unemployment — the analysis underpinning the MPC's votes. In 2026 the MPR meetings are 5 February, 30 April, 30 July, 5 November; in 2027 they are provisionally 4 February, 29 April, 29 July, 4 November. These are marked with an "MPR" badge in the calendars above.

When are the MPC meeting minutes released?

Immediately — unlike the U.S. Federal Reserve, which publishes FOMC minutes three weeks after each meeting, the Bank of England releases the full minutes, including the vote count of every member, at 12:00 noon together with the decision itself.

Where does the data on this page come from?

Every date, rate, and vote on this page comes directly from the Bank of England’s official website (bankofengland.co.uk) — the MPC dates page, the official Bank Rate history database, and the published MPC voting history. The data is used under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Each value carries its retrieval date, and the page is updated after every MPC decision.
